MOSS-Image vs FLUX.2, Qwen-Image and Z-Image

Four popular open image models, compared on the things that decide real projects: size, license, text rendering, layout control and speed.

Short answer: pick MOSS-Image when the words and their positions matter — posters, menus, signage, infographics — or when you need a small, Apache-2.0 model you can fine-tune. Pick FLUX.2 [dev] for general image quality and editing if a non-commercial license is acceptable, Qwen-Image for a large Apache-2.0 model with an editing family, and Z-Image-Turbo when speed on a consumer GPU matters most.

You can test MOSS-Image online on your own prompts before deciding.

Sizes and licenses from each Hugging Face model card, checked 26 October 2026. “Not documented” means the official card does not describe a native bounding-box input; it does not mean the model can’t follow positions described in words.

Text rendering

OpenMOSS built LongLongTextBench to test long passages — 180 to 2,800 characters — in English and Chinese. On its Mean-6 text coverage score:

ModelMean-6
MOSS-Image96.3
Qwen-Image-251264.9

That is the best result among open-weight models in the report. FLUX.2 and Z-Image were not part of this comparison. Short headlines are easier for every model; the difference shows mostly on dense, multi-line text such as menus, notes and slides.

Layout control

This is MOSS-Image’s clearest advantage. It accepts a JSON layout where every object and text line has a bounding box. On 7Bench (object placement), the report measures:

ModelmIoU
MOSS-Image0.679
Ideogram 4.00.243
Qwen Image 3.0 Pro0.169
Seedream 5.0 Pro0.167
Nano Banana Pro0.149
GPT Image 20.143

Every model received the same target boxes: the four API models got the original JSON prompts, and Ideogram 4 (public FP8 weights) got the boxes in its own JSON schema. Ideogram’s own report claims about 0.69 mIoU on 7Bench, so treat this as OpenMOSS’s measurement under its setup, and as a test of box placement rather than overall image quality. Try it with our layout editor.

Overall preference

In OpenMOSS’s RealLayoutArena human study, the full MOSS-Image system scored 1698.70 Elo — second to GPT Image 2 and ahead of Seedream 5.0 Pro. When nine generators received the same enhanced prompts, the MOSS-Image backbone ranked first (1807.34), ahead of ERNIE Image (1748.51).

Caveats

  • MOSS-Image’s benchmark numbers come from its own developers and haven’t been independently reproduced.
  • Model versions move quickly; newer Qwen and FLUX releases may differ from the versions above.
  • The best test is your own prompt. Run the same brief on each model at its recommended settings and compare the text letter by letter.

Questions

Is MOSS-Image better than FLUX.2?

For text-heavy designs and exact placement, MOSS-Image has the edge: it reads JSON bounding boxes natively and leads open models on OpenMOSS’s long-text benchmark. FLUX.2 [dev] is a much larger 32B model with a non-commercial license and remains a strong choice for general image quality and editing.

MOSS-Image or Qwen-Image for Chinese text?

Both render Chinese well. On OpenMOSS’s LongLongTextBench, MOSS-Image scored 96.3 versus 64.9 for Qwen-Image-2512 on long passages. Qwen-Image is larger (20B) and has an editing variant; MOSS-Image is smaller (5B) and adds layout boxes.

Which is the fastest?

Z-Image-Turbo is built for speed with 8 sampling steps. MOSS-Image defaults to 50 steps; a community 8-step LoRA exists but is still a work in progress.
